When a child needs extra help…
Where do they go?
A spare room.
A corridor table.
A corner of a classroom.
Not terrible.
Just… often second best.
And I understand why.
Space is tight.
Rooms are full.
You make it work.
But it’s worth pausing on this.
Because what does that space say?
About their worth.
About their potential.
About how much we believe in them.
These are often the children who most need to feel chosen.
Not sidelined.
And of course, we would never say:
“These children matter less.”
But environment can imply it — without us meaning to.
Children notice.
They notice which spaces feel important.
Which spaces feel temporary.
Which spaces feel like an afterthought.
The good news is, this is rarely about budget.
It’s about intention.
So here’s something simple to try this week:
- Walk your intervention space.
- Stand in it.
- Sit in it.
- Look at it as if you’re the child being taken there.
- Ask yourself:
- What does this space say about me?
- Then choose one thing to improve.
Clear the clutter.
Match the furniture.
Add something that makes it feel purposeful.
Not perfect.
Just intentional.
The children who need the most support…
should never get the weakest space.
