You’ve heard about schools losing their outstanding rating. Here’s one that got outstanding twice!

We so often hear about schools no longer being outstanding.

But what we don’t hear about as often is those that retained their outstanding judgement.

And what I find is these schools have done this by creating really impressive schools, with a great culture.

Tracy Cafull is one of our speakers at Moving to Outstanding 2023: Best practice from recently outstanding headteachers.

Tracy is the headteacher of Great Bentley Primary School, Colchester, Essex and they achieved outstanding twice: September 2015 and February 2022.

Great Bentley Primary School is a one  form entry primary school with a higher than average number of people needing SEND support.

The school has been on quite a journey over the years:

2012 – Good

2014 – Requires improvement

Sept 2015 – Outstanding – re inspected in Nov 2015 – Outstanding

Nov 2022 – Outstanding

Tracey reflected on her own leadership style and why she is passionate about education. Being a PPG kid from Clacton, she wants every child to have a chance like she did. But she also realised her initial and learnt style of leadership –  that of ‘telling people what to do’ – wasn’t going to give their children the best.

She needed the team to grow the school, it couldn’t all come from her, and Tracey realised she needed to facilitate staff and adults to become the best version of themselves. To be an integral part of school improvement.

So, she took the Ofsted pressure off the team and developed the ‘I am me well-being hub’.

The results speak for themselves, not just the twice ‘outstanding’ Ofsted judgement, but the superb culture of the school, the results for their children and the fact Tracey’s leaders are going to be leaders of other schools.

Come and learn from Tracy and other inspiring head teachers who have created the kind of great school we all want to create.
