“The environment of both my schools has changed beyond recognition.”

That’s what one executive head told me after an environmental walk.

Not after a big refurbishment.
Not after spending a large sum.

Just after looking at the school differently.

She said:

“In classrooms and corridors — everything feels different.”

And that’s what I’ve seen time and again.

Not from dramatic changes.

But from small, intentional ones.

Clear surfaces.
Consistent displays.
Spaces that feel thought-through.
Standards that are visible, not just spoken.

And the impact goes beyond how things look.

Behaviour becomes more consistent.
Staff expectations align.
Children take more pride.

The atmosphere shifts.

Not because of money.

Because of clarity.

I love this example because it shows something important.

You don’t need a full refit.

You need:

Fresh eyes.
Clear standards.
And the courage to see what you’ve stopped seeing.

So here’s something to try this week:

Walk one shared space — a corridor, a cloakroom, a staffroom.

Look at it honestly.

What does it say?

Then choose one thing to improve.
