There’s a particular kind of tired that only school leaders understand.
It’s the tired that comes from holding the impossible —
and still creating magic anyway.
Every head I’ve spoken to this term has carried some version of the same heartbreak:
There isn’t enough funding.
There isn’t enough support.
There isn’t enough of you to go around.
And yet…
every single day, you quietly turn impossibility into something hopeful.
That’s where my “heartbreak and weird optimism” comes from.
Because yes — the system is stretched in ways that feel unfair.
But also yes — schools are doing extraordinary things in spite of it.
When I think about Dawn Titus’s School, St Joseph’s in Willesden, it still moves me.
Higher-than-average SEND.
County lines on the doorstep.
Real, relentless challenges.
And still — a culture that is warm, joyful, rigorous and utterly child-centred.
Outstanding, not because the context is easy…
but because the people refuse to give up on what’s possible.
And I see that same spirit in you.
In heads who hold more pressure than anyone should.
In teams who show up with heart.
In the hundreds of tiny miracles that never make it into newsletters or reports,
but change the trajectory of a child’s life.
So as we step into the Easter holidays, here’s a gentle reflection for the week:
👉 Where have you created something hopeful this term, when the circumstances felt impossible?
Because you have.
You absolutely have.
And naming it matters.
So take a moment to remember.
Want an ‘even better if’? Come up with at least 5 and feel the warmth from fulfilling your purpose flow through you.
This next couple of weeks are an invitation —
a pause your mind has been craving.
A moment to soften the shoulders.
To breathe again.
To let the nervous system catch up with you.
Whatever Easter looks like for you —
family, friends, quiet moments, catching up with work (because yes, I know you like to),
I hope there is a pocket of time just for you.
A moment of rest
A moment of relief
A moment of remembering that you’re doing far better than you think.
Here’s to heartbreak, weird optimism —
and the magic you create in the middle of both.
Wishing you a restorative Easter,
Sonia ✨🙏💛
