Successful difficult conversations

Want better well-being? Try this easy shift

Do you have great staff well-being in your school?

It’s something we all want.

But here’s a thought…

Well-being isn’t something *we do to* people.

It’s something we *create with* them.

Yoga, breakfasts, early finishes—great.

But they only go so far.

True well-being happens when everyone takes ownership.

You create the conditions.

They bring the awareness.

It’s about all of us asking ourselves:

– What support do I need—and am I using it?

– How do I set boundaries that protect my energy?

– What habits help me thrive?

Because well-being isn’t just about what the school provides—

It’s about how each person chooses to show up, take care, and contribute.

So maybe the question this week is:

How can you help your team *own* their well-being—rather than wait for it to be delivered?

✅ Well-being Action Plan (for staff to own their well-being)

One way to help staff own their well-being is with these 5 reflective questions:

  1. What helps me thrive at work?
    (Think: tasks, people, routines, habits)
  2. What tends to drain me at work?
    (Think: situations, timings, workload triggers)
  3. What boundaries do I need to protect my well-being?
(E.g. lunch break sacred, no emails after 6, quiet space when planning)
  4. What support do I need—and who can help?
    (Colleagues, leaders, external resources)

5. What’s one small thing I can start this week?
(Keep it doable—a 10-minute walk, a break, asking for help)
