Successful difficult conversations

The most common people issue in school is…

Not. Following. Policies.

I bet that sounds familiar?

There are 5 common difficult conversations in schools and this is always the most common.

Marking policy.

Sickness policy.

Dress policy.

Behaviour policy.

Mobile phone policy.

If only writing it down meant it was adhered to.

And it’s wearing to keep going on about it every time a policy isn’t followed.

Here’s a tip to help you.

For a week or two make a list of any policy ‘incursions’ you see. It can be good for your SLT to do this as well.

This can be simple and scribbled in the back of a notebook: who, what policy, when.

At the end of week or two, collate your data.

What does it tell you?

  • Is it a policy that is constantly not being followed by many?
  • Or is it someone who isn’t following a particular policy?
  • Or is it someone who isn’t following many policies?

Whichever it is, you or your SLT can direct their attention to fixing this common problem.

Let me know what you find, I always like to hear from you 🙂
