Welcome back — I hope half-term gave you at least a moment to breathe, reset, and settle.
Spring 2 can feel full-on, so here’s something to support you as you ease back in.
School leaders tell me this all the time:
“We’ve shared the policy.
We’ve explained it in briefing.
Everyone nodded.
So why aren’t people actually doing it?”
And I get it — it’s frustrating.
You know the policy makes sense.
You know it will help children.
You know it’s reasonable.
So why does it feel like pinning jelly to the wall?
Here’s the uncomfortable truth I’ve learned from walking into hundreds of schools:
Policies rarely fail because they’re wrong.
They fail because behaviours aren’t clear.
Good people don’t wake up trying to get it wrong.
They interpret things differently.
They fill in the gaps with their own version of “what good looks like”.
And suddenly you don’t have one behaviour — you have six.
All slightly different.
All pulling in different directions.
Which means you end up carrying the clarity that the system should be holding.
The very best schools I visit do something simple but powerful:
They make the behaviour part of who they are.
Part of their culture.
Part of their identity.
Because we want great behaviour…
“This is what it looks like when we challenge low-level behaviour.”
Because we have a value of excellence…
“This is what we mean by ‘high expectations’.”
Because our school is like a family…
“This is how we greet children at the door.”
Because we value education…
“This is what ‘ready to learn’ actually looks like.”
Not theoretically.
Not in long documents.
In real, everyday moments.
It’s tiny.
It’s clear.
And it transforms consistency.
Because people aren’t confused anymore.
They’re aligned.
So here’s a thought exercise for this week:
- What isn’t being done consistently?
- Is the policy unclear?
- Or (more likely) are some people simply not doing it?
If so — what value does it link to?
And how can you articulate that value in a way that makes consistency the obvious next step?
Let me know – I love to hear from you 🙂
If this struck a chord, share it with someone who’s trying to move their school from good to great.
Here’s to clarity and consistency this week.
