A head said something to me recently that really stayed with me.
“I’d stopped seeing it.”
She was talking about her school environment.
Not because she didn’t care.
Not because standards had dropped.
She’d just been there a long time.
Walking the same corridors.
Seeing the same classrooms.
And over time, things had become… normal.
Not bad.
Just a bit tired.
Displays curling.
Clutter building up.
Spaces that felt more functional than intentional.
And the moment she saw it again, she couldn’t unsee it.
That’s the shift.
You don’t need a big plan.
You need fresh eyes.
So here’s something simple to try this week:
Walk your school as if it’s your first day.
Not as the head.
As a parent.
As a child.
Give yourself 10 minutes.
What stands out?
What feels aligned with your standards?
What doesn’t?
Write down just 3 things you’d change.
Start there.
Small changes.
Clear standards.
Big difference.
Here’s to fresh eyes,
Sonia 💛
P.S. If you’d like a set of fresh eyes on your environment, I run a small number of environmental walkarounds each term. They’re simple, practical and often lead to quick wins you can implement straight away. Just reply if you’d like to know more.
