75% of school leaders don’t have at least 2 hours to think.
You might be thinking, 2 hours! Where am I going to find two hours just for thinking?! That would be amazing (and a luxury).
But as a leader, thinking is a critical part of our roles. In fact, high quality, strategic thinking as a headteacher is arguably THE most important part of the role – because who else in your organisation can do that?
And when you think about the number of hours you work, 2 hours isn’t a lot.
I mean, imagine if you were working a 40 hour week (I know, right?!). 2 hours is 5% of your week.
If you’re working a 60 hour week then it’s just 3%!
But you’re not alone if getting 2 hours of quality thinking time feels impossible!
So what can you do?
Here are some tips for you to try, and apply at the start of a new calendar year:
- Diary it ahead – put a recurring block in your diary. You might not always get it, but if you got it every 2nd or 3rd time that would still be something.
- 2 hours too much to squeeze into a packed week? How about an hour? Or even 30mins? Anything is a start.
Next week I’m going to look at something that is definitely getting in the way of you having time to think…

Track your time.
Do this in the easiest way possible:
- Look at your diary, add notes on what you spend time on.
- If you can do it for a day, great.
- A week, even better.
Then review. What is it telling you?
