Successful difficult conversations

Why 65% of difficult conversations fail—and how to fix them

65% of difficult conversations don’t get fixed.

The problem comes back.

Again and again.

Does that sound familiar?

It doesn’t have to be this way. I promised. Yes, promise!

I’ve seen it.

Spotlight: Sometimes we need to believe it can be done.

So meet Matthew Round.

He had an issue.

It involved several members of staff.

All weren’t doing something they needed to.

And it was something that is a necessary part of the job.

It’s not optional or nice to do, but mandatory.

Matthew had been trying to get the people to do it.

For. A. Year.

He’d had some success, but it would slip back.

It was boring. Frustrating. A waste of time. But necessary.

What was the problem?

Matthew had experience of many difficult conversations, but hadn’t been trained in how to have them successfully.

He was doing the best he could, and was doing well by all standards.

But 1 day of training showed him how to put the 3 core components of a successful difficult conversation in place:

  • Structure
  • Emotional management
  • Psychologically safe space

The result? He had the conversations again.

New and improved.

They landed.

The problem was fixed.

For good.

Once you’ve learnt the skills, they last for life (and can be applied to everything in life!).

You can hear it from Matthew himself: https://youtu.be/APoKCuq7UKs . I think his challenges will resonate with you 🙂
